Getting to Know Advance Pest Control in Bristol

365Bristol have been speaking with Adam Leonard, owner of Advance Pest Control in Bristol about how he is solving problems for individuals, families and businesses in and around Bristol who have had a pesky pest problem.

When was Advance Pest Control started and what made you want to get involved in the pest control business?

I started off my career working for Bristol City Council.  I worked in the 4 main directorates, all in office/admin roles.  In 1992, I moved to the Environmental Health section and took a job in the office of the pest control section. I absolutely loved it!  In no time at all, I began learning all I could about the different public health pests so as to able to answer the vast array of questions being fired at me from the general public on a daily basis. My appetite for knowledge in pest control grew at a phenomenal rate and very soon after, when one came up, I applied for and took a job as a pest technician for BCC, at that time I was the youngest ever pest controller employed by them. After working for them for a period of 13 years, I decided to go it alone and it really has been the best decision I could have made! So thanks to the council, I’m probably the only pest controller you’ll meet who can touch type and is reasonably adept at tee line short hand!

 

What have you learned in your 22 years working in pest control?

In 22 years I’ve gained a vast amount of experience in the pest control industry and have learned to look at problems intuitively. Pest control has allowed me to develop a wide range of skills in various ways. I feel I am a great peoples person and helping so many people on a daily basis, is what I love. Pest control affords me a massive amount of job satisfaction, after all, people are always happy to see me!

 

What’s the worst pest problem you’ve ever had to deal with?

There have been so many! I’ve dealt with properties running alive with rats and once was called in to fumigate a ship at Avonmouth docks that was dripping with cockroaches.

And is there anything you wouldn’t be prepared to tackle?

I deal with all manner of pests, rodents, insects and birds and to be fair, not much phases me. Although, I was phoned a few months back by a customer at 2am who had managed to lose 3 Tarantulas in her home.. I went, but didn’t relish to idea of the hunt too much. Thankfully all 3 were found before I arrived! So far, there’s not been any issue I’ve not been prepared to tackle.. but watch this space!

 

You cover both domestic and commercial premises, what’s the best way to get in touch?

We help both commercial and domestic customers and due to how busy we are, phoning us, is always the most direct route to get our help. If a phone message is left, we always endeavour to call back within 30 minutes.

And how highly do you value good relationships with your customers?

In my book, good relationships with your customers is paramount and should be at the forefront of any business. Thankfully we have great relationships with our customers and the evidence of that is the levels of repeat business and customers we have had for many years.

You’re obviously Bristol based but which other areas do you cover? 

Currently, we cover Bristol and Bath as our main areas. We have built a steadfast reputation for our Bird Proofing works and often travel for this. We recently were awarded the tender for bird proofing the roof areas of Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth and our work there featured in one of our industries biggest pest magazines. This was the largest bird proofing job we had undertaken and our customer was thrilled with the results. As for covering other areas, in the future, I envisage you seeing Advance Pest Control Bristol/Bath/Swindon/Gloucester and many more vans in the streets!

 

How big is the APC team?

Currently we have a team of three and are expecting to expand in the near future.

 

What can you offer customers that bigger, national-level Pest Control companies might not?

As a LOCAL company, Bristol born and bred, we can offer many things that often the bigger multi-nationals can’t. Being local, we have a fantastic knowledge of Bristol and the associated problems within its areas.
