Cary Grant Comes Home for the Weekend with a string of November events

Posted on: 28 Sep 2017

A number of special events celebrating Bristol-born screen legend Cary Grant's relationship with his hometown are coming up this November, including a Christmas screening of his 1947 hit film The Bishop's Wife and a free walking tour retracing his old favourite spots and hidden historical landmarks. The events are a part of the Cary Grant Comes Home for the Weekend Festival, celebrating Grant's life and his incredible journey from Horfield to Hollywood.

Cary Grant sailed from England to New York in 1920, eventually forging a career as a major Hollywood film star

Many Bristolians are aware that Cary Grant was born Archibald Leach in the Bristol suburb of Horfield in 1904. Some might also be aware that he performed as part of an acrobatic troupe at the Bristol Hippodrome before sailing to New York in 1920 and going on to become one of Hollywood's most iconic leading men. But how much more do you know about one of Bristol's greatest exports? Which city centre cinema did he used to attend with his mum? Where did he used to hang out when he bunked off school? And what is his association with Bristol Cathedral?

Whether you're a confirmed Grant fan or simply curious to find out more about him, there will be something for everything in the November events, curated by the Cary Grant Comes Home for the Weekend team. Below are the details of two events taking place in Bristol this November that are a must for all Cary Grant fans:

'Looking for Archie: Cary Grant's Bristol' Walking Tour - Free

This walking tour retraces Cary Grant's hometown haunts while uncovering Bristol's hidden cinema history. Participants will be led on a guided tour of Bristol city centre featuring the locations that inspired the star's journey from Horfield to Hollywood, and the spots where the Bristol Post photographed him on his many visits home. Tickets for this one are free but booking in advance is strongly advised. More information can be found on the event's website here.

Christmas screening of The Bishop's Wife - £12-14

The ultimate Christmassy film featuring that famous ice-skating scene, The Bishop's Wife stars Cary Grant alongside Loretta Young and David Niven, and tells the story of a guardian angel (Grant) sent to guide a newly-appointed bishop (Niven) in his struggle to gather funds for his cathedral. The screening will take place inside Bristol Cathedral - a truly unique opportunity that is not to be missed. It will also include an introduction by founder and CEO of IMDb.com (and huge Cary Grant fan) Col Needham. The event includes a glass of bubbly on arrival as well as hot chocolate, popcorn and live music from the UWE Big Band. More information can be found via the event's website here.
