The October 2016 half term is just around the corner. There's so much going on around our great city to choose from - 365Bristol takes a look at what’s going on to keep the youngsters busy!

 

Autumn half term in Bristol runs from Monday 24th - Friday 28th October, though we all know the weekends have to count too! Luckily for Bristol residents and visitors alike, there is loads going on throughout the city. Take a look at our round up of ideas to keep children of all ages busy over the half term week!

Did you know that Bristol was home to the world’s biggest trampoline park? Halloween Trail - The Arcade in Broadmead - MORE INFO

Head to the Arcade in Bristol between Wednesday 26th and Monday 31st October and see if you can find 7 tombstones in the shop windows. Each has a letter and then make the word to win a prize. Collect your sheet and pen from The Artists in Units 6/7 and return to them when complete. It’s all free!

 

Family events - Arnos Vale Cemetery - MORE INFO

A series of family-friendly events await those who make the trip to Arnos Vale. Monday sees an expert-led pottery class specially tailored for children, before they can learn the ins and outs of woodland exploration in Tuesday’s Creepy Crawly Critters Workshop. Come Wednesday, there is the chance to create some ‘Creepy Crafts’ to take home, unleash an inner Sherlock Holmes with the Detective Project Kids Workshop or watch Hocus Pocus at an outdoor screening in the evening. Similar activities take place on Thursday and Friday too.

Bristol Family Arts Festival is a month long citywide celebration of family creativity, with a packed programme of events for all ages. Led by Arnolfini in collaboration with partners across the city: The Architecture Centre, Children's Scrapstore, Blaise Castle House Museum, Bristol Cathedral, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Bristol Old Vic, The Churches Conservation Trust, Mshed, National Trust, RWA, Spike Island, St George's, Brunel's ss Great Britain, Tobacco Factory Theatres and Watershed. Get involved in music, theatre, storytelling, drawing, making and much more!

As part of the educational half-term fun at Bristol Museum, join the team for a pair of special child-friendly events. On Saturday 22nd, get your junior Egyptologist on for a trip around the museum’s atmospheric Assyria Gallery, with tales about Ancient Egypt narrated by four local authors. Or if that just isn’t ancient enough for you, on the following Wednesday join the family-friendly curator-led tour of the Jurassic fossils behind the scenes of the geology store.

Clip 'n Climb is composed of a wide selection of climbing-based activities providing healthy, challenging fun for all the family! Test your resolve and determination across all of their separate challenges - climb commando style on the Jungle Gym, reach new heights on the Skyscraper, take the Speed Climbing challenge, tangle yourself in Spaghetti, dare to tackle the Lightning Crack or race your friends up the Stairway to Heaven! No climbing experience is necessary and full briefing is given. Visitors are required to arrive 15 minutes prior to your booked session for your introduction and briefing as part of your fun-packed session and full equipment will be provided. Indoor climbing has never been easier or safer as automatic belay devices take in the slack while you climb before lowering you gently to the ground.

Monday 24th October: Crafty Cathedral: Family Storytelling. Spend the morning with author Mimi Thebo and her book 'Dreaming the Bear'.

Wednesday 26th October: Parcels of Comfort: Families activities exploring WWI. Be inspired by the parcels and packages sent during WWI - have a go at making your own!

 

Football Fun Days with Bristol Rovers - Mangotsfield School - MORE INFO

This October 2016 half term, Bristol Rovers are offering Football Fun Days for boys and girls aged 6-13 at just £10 for 5 hours, which also includes a free ticket to a league game! From Monday 24th - Friday 28th October, boys and girls of all abilities will have the opportunity to not only experience great coaching and fun activities, but also meet members of the first team squad and receive a free u16 ticket to a League One game! It’s returning again this year after proving to be such a hit in previous years and a great time is assured yet again.

Colour in the Crypt - St John on the Wall - MORE INFO

In medieval times, St John on the Wall would have been very colourful inside, but now that colour has gone. Join us at this family arts event to put the colour back into the church and crypt - make a kaleidoscope to see how this colour would have looked, watch the colour disappear with your own spinning top, enjoy dressing up and play some medieval games. All ages welcome. Free, drop in. 11am - 4pm. Free entry.

 

Berkeley Castle (Sun 23rd - Weds 26th October) - Berkeley Castle - MORE INFO

Open until 7pm every day, this is a great place to be for your Halloween thrills this year! Creep down to the cellars and meet wizards and witches mixing potions and casting spells. Carve your own pumpkin to take home...and leave all the mess them! Watch and meet owls swooping around the Great Hall from 4.30pm every day. Wizard & Witch fancy dress competitions. Bring a torch and wellies to explore the Castle and grounds ‘after dark’ as the gates stay open until 7pm (last admission 6pm). Visit their Yurt Tearoom and try spooktacular Halloween treats. Stop off at the pop-up take-away from 5pm for delicious hot snacks, toffee apples and drinks whilst you roam around the castle grounds.

 

Gloucester Road Picture book trail - MORE INFO

Children’s picture book publisher Book Island have lain a trail along the Gloucester Road, comprising the perfect day out for little ones. 13 businesses, spanning the length of the street, will have one picture book on display, with each posing a question based on its contents. Answer all of these questions to be in with a chance of winning a £60 book token for you and your school!
