To celebrate the new series, The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity, is launching a sweet fundraising campaign: Wallace & Gromit’s BIG Bake! Whether you are a beginner baker or a pastry pro, let the edible exploits of the new batch of bakers inspire you to raise some dough for Bristol Children’s Hospital with a brilliant bake sale.

Anyone can take part and you can hold your BIG Bake at any time throughout the year, with free fundraising packs available at BIGBake.org. The money raised will support The Grand Appeal’s £1.5million Home from Home Appeal, to fund new family accommodation at Bristol Children’s Hospital. The Grand Appeal continues to fundraise tirelessly for Bristol Children's Hospital, funding life-saving medical equipment and pioneering new facilities that keep it among the very best in the country. As well as this, it funds patient-friendly artwork, playrooms and therapies to keep children’s comfort and wellbeing at the heart of the hospital.

Wallace & Gromit were joined by Bristol Children’s Hospital patient Harriet Thomas, 3, from Bristol to launch the campaign at a special BIG Bake pop-up space at The Arcade in Broadmead. Harriet, her brother Sam, 6, and parents Debbie and James were invited to take part in a special BIG Bake class at Bordeaux Quay’s cookery school alongside several other families who have benefited from the care of Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Debbie said, “Harriet was born with a hole in her heart and underwent open heart surgery last December when she was just three years old.  I can’t express how terrifying it was to have to let go and leave my baby girl in the hands of a surgeon, but the doctors and nurses could not have been more caring and kind. Thankfully, Harriet made a speedy recovery and was even able to come home in time for Christmas.

“We will be forever grateful to everyone who looked after us, and when The Grand Appeal asked us to be a part of this year’s BIG Bake we jumped at the chance! It was brilliant fun to bake the recipes together as a family, and we hope it inspires other families to give it a go and support Bristol Children’s Hospital.”

Suzanne Maverick, fundraising manager, The Grand Appeal, said, “With The Great British Bake Off back on our screens we hope bakers across Bristol and the South West are inspired to whip out their whisks, preheat their ovens and get baking for Bristol Children’s Hospital!

“It was wonderful Harriet and her family could join us to open our BIG Bake pop-up at The Arcade today and enjoy cake with Wallace & Gromit.  Baking is such a simple and fun way to bring loved ones together, and by getting involved with this year’s BIG Bake you’ll be helping other families too.

“We are so lucky to have such amazing care and medical facilities on our doorstep here in Bristol, but many young patients and their families have to travel huge distances for the treatment they need. The money raised by our £1.5million Home from Home Appeal will help keep families together when their child is critically ill, giving them somewhere to stay just minutes from the hospital so that they can be there for them when they need it most. Your support really will bake a difference!”

The tasty campaign is supported by Homepride Flour and even has its very own Star Baker: royal baker Fiona Cairns! Fiona is best known for creating the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s eight-tiered wedding cake, and has donated four recipes for BIG bakers to whip up at home.
