Bristol Bad Film Club: Chopping Mall and Runaway at the Arnolfini on Thursday 28 July 2016

Bristol Bad Film Club will present an unmissable double-bill of 80s cheesily classic killler robot movies when it screens Chopping Mall and Runaway at the Arnolfini on Thursday 28 July 2016.

Chopping Mall was made in 1986 and tells the story of eight teenagers who find themselves trapped in high-tech shopping mall which includes state-of-the-art security robots programmed to kill or apprehend potential thieves using tranquilizer guns and tasers. While the teens decide to throw a party in one of the furniture stores, a lightning storm destroys the main computer system controlling the robots who then malfunction and go on a relentless teenage killing spree.

Runaway, made in 1984, stars the reliably moustachioed Tom Selleck in this near-future tale where robots are commonplace. Selleck is Jack Ramsay, a sergeant heading up part of a special division that handles 'runaways' - malfunctioning robots. His team is often ridiculed but when one of the robots turns out to be programmed to kill, he discovers a dastardly plot to create an army of killer robots, and his son is one of the targets. Cue an OTT, scenery-chewing villain in the form of KISS's Gene Simmons and female support from Cheers' Kirstie Alley.

The sci-fi double whammy will be introduced by a panel of horror and sci-fi experts who will reliably guide you through the perils and pitfalls of kitsch 80s killer robot flicks. Tickets cost £8 and all profits will go to the charity Smile With Siddy

To see trailers for the movies and to get your hands on tickets, head to the Bristol Bad Film Club at www.bristolbadfilmclub.co.uk. The Watershed is located at: 1 Canons Road, Harbourside, Bristol, BS1 5TX.
