Bristol sports report for 22 and 23 August 2014

Posted on: 23 Aug 2014

The Bristol teams all played and the result ended up one win, one loss, one draw. Here's who did what:

WINNER: Bristol Rovers 1 Telford United 0

Finally Bristol Rovers have secured a win in the heady heights of the Vanarama Conference with a not so thrilling 1-0 home win over Telford United. Steve Mildenhall made a fine early save to stop Telford taking the lead and aside from a few punched clearances he really didn't have much to do. Bristol Rovers hit the crossbar after 20 minutes from Neal Trotman's header and that's the closest either team came to a goal in the first half. Early in the second half the deadlock was broken with a wonder goal from Ollie Clarke who received the ball 30 yards out a picked his spot in the right corner to which he sent a curling shot past Telford keeper Jonathan Hedge. Bristol Rovers win!

5,450 people attended which included about 160 away fans so not a bad turn out and with the winning streak, well of one, started let's hope this is built on throughout the season. The Kids Go Free initiative is a great idea though and let's hope the other clubs follow suit in both codes!

On Bank Holiday Monday Bristol Rovers are away to Forest Green Rovers just up the M5 - the game is also being shown on BT Sport as it is the 1pm kick off and the following Saturday 30th August it's a home fixture against Halifax Town.

LOSER: London Irish 27 Bristol Rugby 26

To be fair a single point loss to Premiership opposition London Irish is a fine result especially considering Bristol were playing away as well. Bristol scored four tries through number 8 Mitch Eadie, winger Andy Short (2) and substitute hooker Ross Johnston. Welsh fly half Matthew Morgan had an impressive game adding three conversions out of his four attempts to the two try assists for Short and Eadie. It was just unfortunate that he couldn't knock over a long range penalty to win the game in the dying minutes.

Bristol Rugby have another pre-season friendly this Tuesday 26 August away to Clifton RFC. A big win will be expected and kick off is scheduled for 7.30pm.

DRAW : Rochdale Town 1 Bristol City 1

Bristol City just couldn't hold on to their early lead against Rochdale Town which would have seen them go joint top of League 1 instead of the joint third with Preston North End they find themsleves in, behind Peterborough United and leaders Fleetwood Town.

Luke Freeman scored his first goal for Bristol City after 16 minutes firing home from just outside the box past the unsighted Rochdale goalkeeper Conrad Logan and they retained that league until the 56th minute. Ian Henderson got the better of his defender to flick in the equaliser for Rochdale and City have goalkeeper Frank Fielding to thank for a fine last minute save to deny the home team all 3 points.

Bristol City's next game is on Sunday 31 August away to Notts County.

Bank Holiday Monday sees England entertain India at The County Ground in Horfield, Bristol. Here's hoping that the 16,000 fans are entertained too and the darned rain stays away for the day.
