Great value for money, excellent tasting food and a welcoming atmosphere - I’ll definitely be returning to The Crafty Egg again soon.

The Crafty Egg is a cosy café in the heart of Stokes Croft which has acquired a large, brunch loving fan-base since its opening in 2016.

Unsurprisingly, they specialise in breakfast and brunch dishes that showcase a multitude of ways to serve up eggy goodness. Their menu features a range of baked egg options, meat, veggie and vegan takes on the classic English breakfast (the full works), and a selection of lighter alternatives, most of which feature the superfood of the moment - avocado.

We arrived at 11am last Saturday morning, and it was evident even as we stepped through the door that there was a definite buzz about the place. All but one table was taken, and the staff were clearly extremely busy. The café itself is quite small - just the one room with an assortment of tables, and two laptop bars for those wanting to work with a coffee.

We ordered our food then took a seat by the window at a wooden bar which overlooks Stokes Croft road itself (The Crafty Egg sits directly opposite the iconic Carriageworks) - the perfect spot for people watching. If there isn’t enough happening out on the street to entertain you, they have a hefty selection of music magazines available for your perusal (warning: they may just inspire you to book a spontaneous festival trip).

Our drinks were brought over promptly. I had their Summer Berry Boost smoothie - mixed berries, banana, oats, milk, honey and lemon, and my brunch date Frankee went for an almond milk cappuccino. The smoothie was thick with a sweet but natural flavour.

The staff were super friendly and chatty throughout, with one commenting that he loved my camera as he set down our drinks - something that will always earn some brownie points.

Food wise, I chose the salmon and avocado potato stack. It came with cream cheese, rocket and a poached egg, all arranged in a jenga-like fashion on the plate. The flavours complemented each other perfectly and although it didn’t look that large a dish, it was deceptively filling. The potato rosti component really filled it out, and the egg was cooked well enough to live up to the venue’s name.

Frankee had the Moroccan Eggs with chickpeas and ras-el-hanout and kindly allowed me to have a taster. Served in a pan set atop a wooden bread board, they certainly looked the part. It’s not hard to see why this place is popular with food photographers - the presentation of the dishes is excellent. They were served with a side of doughy Abu Noor Pitta that was perfect for mopping up the last remnants.
