Bloodborne is the complete opposite of what you would expect of modern gaming that it doesn’t hold your hand through the process and there is not an obvious direction that you have to go you have to use your instincts and trust your guts. It will kick your teeth in with its difficulty and it nice for once for a game to be challenging which punishes you for failing because it’s never cheap with difficulty because in most instances if you die it’s your fault.

Bloodborne PS4 review scores 4.5 out of 5

The game takes place in a fictional world called Yharnam, but it maybe fictional you can tell that it takes inspiration from gothic horror from the Victorian era with its architecture coupled with the enemy designs which like they’ve been pulled straight out of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or Bram Stokers Dracula. All the enemies are varied and disgusting, one minute you’ll fighting werewolves and angry villagers to horrors that lurk in the shadows that stalk you. This game is absolutely beautiful with its atmosphere and visuals, this is what The Order 1886 should been with its more supernatural elements.

So what type of game is it? I here you ask well most people would associate it with an action RPG and they wouldn’t be wrong, but I however would say it’s more survival horror and the reason for that is it has some creepy elements with the enemies and when they jump up behind you, but also its because of the constant fragile state you find yourself as you take a lot of damage very easily and you must time your strikes or you will punished. You mustn’t be too aggressive because you tire out very quickly and then the enemy will over whelm you and then you’ll die, the key word for this game is patience because it is a difficult game, but once you figure out the patterns of enemy movement you’ll feel accomplished every time you kill a large creature or a boss.

Like most RPG’s you’ll be traversing through a rich world to explore which will let you clear dungeons to find new loot such as armour, special items and new and more powerful weapons such as swords and guns. You can also collect Blood Echoes which act as the in game currency which you can use to buy new weapons and armour to help your progression and you can gets this by killing enemies and collect blood dews you find in chest etc. However there is a catch when you die you will lose all of your Blood Echoes and you have go all the way back to the last checkpoint which can be miles behind you, but you can recover them all you have to do is find the place you last died and you’ll get them back so be careful and take you time don’t rush this game.

Unlike Dark Souls which has a similar formula you don’t lose a chunk of your health bar when you die and this makes this game far less daunting to tackle because it shows a bit of leniency, but not too much because this game will kick while you’re down. Another interesting element with your health bar is that it has the red bar and little white line and when you are hit you’ll have a chance to recover some health up to that white line by landing hits on the monsters which makes you think before you use a healing item.

The only negative points that I have with this game is that it can have some excruciatingly long loading times and I don’t know if that is the fact that I always play the game in online mode, but they need to be fix this with a patch. Another problem is that the frame rate stutters a fair bit it can run from 30 fps to about 19 fps and it becomes unplayable sometimes, but fortunately it doesn’t happen too often.
