ABOUT BINBAG WISDOM
Binbag Wisdom is a Bristol-based hip-hop collective known for their sharp lyricism, theatrical flair, and a style they often describe as “anarcho-jazz-hop.” The group is fronted by two long-time friends, Jake “MC Binbags” Blackmore and Jack “MC Dur Brain / Wisdom,” whose chemistry on stage is central to the band’s identity.
The duo’s history stretches back over a decade — they first played together in a ska band around 2012 and later spent time busking across New Zealand. When they eventually settled in Bristol, they immersed themselves in the city’s jam-scene culture, which continues to influence the improvisational and collaborative aspects of their work.
Sound & Style
Binbag Wisdom’s music blends nu-jazz grooves, grungy guitar riffs, and hip-hop lyricism, creating a sound that feels both live and organic. Humor plays a major role in their performances and writing. Comedy isn’t just an add-on — it’s a tool they use to tackle serious social topics without ever becoming preachy or heavy-handed.
Their lyrical themes often explore personal purpose, political tension, and modern-day absurdity, wrapped in wordplay that swings between heartfelt and wickedly funny.
Evolution & Live Performance
The group started out with a more traditional band setup, including guitar, bass, percussion, and even clarinet. Over time, their live configuration has evolved, and many shows now feature the two MCs supported by DJ Mr Fitz.
This stripped-back setup allows their lyrical interplay — often part rap, part banter — to take center stage. Their performances are known for feeling half gig, half theatre production, blending storytelling, character work, and improvisation into a single experience.
Their theatrical instincts have recently expanded into full-scale stage pieces, including a musical-comedy style show called The Ballad of Wee Willy Winky, which mixes narrative, comedy, and live rap into an absurd and mischievous storyline.
Themes & Messages
While often humorous, Binbag Wisdom doesn’t shy away from complexity. Their work touches on:
Searching for meaning: They frequently reflect on the artistic struggle and the challenge of trying to “make sense of it all.”
Social commentary: Their lyrics question politics, consumerism, and modern identity — but always with a playful edge.
Self-awareness: They’re known for poking fun at themselves, the music industry, and society at large.

Role in the Bristol Scene
Binbag Wisdom has carved out a distinct place in Bristol’s vibrant music community. They’re regulars at local venues and festivals and are well-respected for their originality, personality, and willingness to experiment with form and genre.
Their mix of theatre, hip-hop, and humor makes them one of the city’s more innovative acts — a group that feels as comfortable on a club stage as they do in a storytelling or theatre setting.
Why They Matter
Binbag Wisdom stands out because they’re more than musicians: they’re storytellers, satirists, and performers who treat each show like a living, breathing piece of theatre. Their blend of vulnerability, comedy, and critique feels authentic and deeply connected to Bristol’s DIY creative spirit.
They make people laugh, think, and feel — often in the same verse.
Looking Ahead
With new narrative-driven shows and continuing musical evolution, Binbag Wisdom shows no signs of slowing down. Their commitment to blending theatre, rap, and satire suggests a future that’s every bit as unpredictable and inventive as their past.
