Nouvelle Vague live at Trinity Centre in Bristol on 20 November 2025

Formed in Paris in 2003 by Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux, Nouvelle Vague embarked on a bold musical experiment: taking influential post-punk and New Wave tracks and reimagining them through a soft, breezy bossa nova lens. Their name is a clever play on words, referencing France’s New Wave cinema, the 1980s New Wave music scene, and literally translating to "new wave" in Portuguese — a nod to the band’s signature style and multicultural inspiration.

The debut album, released in 2004, was an instant phenomenon - turning iconic songs like Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and The Clash’s “Guns of Brixton” into dreamlike, languid reinterpretations. Critics praised the project for its emotional range and inventiveness, and it set the tone for a career defined by sheer originality.

Throughout the years, the collective continued to explore fresh territory, occasionally releasing original material alongside beloved covers. Notable vocalists such as Camille, Mélanie Pain, and Phoebe Killdeer have brought vibrant voices and personalities to the mix, enriching the group’s eclectic soundscape.

Most recently, the project marked its 20th anniversary with a new album rooted in its classic concept yet refreshed with guest singers like Alonya, whose performance of The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” sparked renewed creative momentum for the band.

What Makes Their Live Show Stand Out

In concert, Nouvelle Vague strips it back to the essentials: minimal instrumentation—typically acoustic guitar, keyboards, double bass—and a small ensemble of charismatic vocalists. This blend allows the reinterpretations to breathe, creating an intimate atmosphere where familiar songs feel entirely reborn.

Their performances balance elegance and playfulness: for example, recent shows featured dynamic renditions of Joy Division’s doleful “Love Will Tear Us Apart” alongside spirited, dance-filled interpretations of Public Image Ltd.’s “This Is Not a Love Song,” Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film,” and The Cure’s “A Forest.” Vocalist Alonya, in particular, has garnered attention for her flamboyant stage presence and the theatrical flair she brings to each performance.

Reviews suggest the formula still resonates after two decades: the concept continues to disarm and delight, and the band remains a potent force on the live circuit.
