Mark Thomas : Riot Act at Loco Klub, Bristol

RIOT ACT is conceived as a monthly celebration of joy and togetherness for young people of all ages in the face of the many forces which stand to make our lives more miserable and divided day by day.  At a time when mental health is of national concern and arts and entertainment venues are under threat, join us in this playful act of joyful joint resistance!

Local Comedians, Poets, Musicians and Storytellers perform open slots alongside headliners of national profile in some of Bristol's most exciting and unusual spaces.

At the top of this month’s bill is a man who needs no introduction. Mark Thomas, UK Comedy Legend, the man who caused a government minister to resign, changed laws on tax and protest, became world record holder for number of protests in 24 hours and walked the length of the Israeli wall in the West Bank will headline the Winter Warmer with characteristic firebrand flair.

Headlining with Mark is Lawrence Hoo, the Bristolian Poetry Hero whose work documents the injustices of our times with the distinct, unwavering dedication to righteousness that has seen him make national headlines time after time for his many services to Bristol.

Alongside him is Edson Burton, the Master Bristolian Poet-Storyteller whose work in arenas as diverse as Poetry, Radio Theatre and Opera has shed light on the hidden stories beneath our feet, and recently saw him receive an MBE for his services to the arts and to the community in Bristol.

Also joining us is Dave Wynne-Jones, Favourite of the local poetry scene, whose work on subjects ranging from political activism to the natural world has been celebrated by audiences across the South West and in print.

Hannah Streeter, Rising Local Stand Up Star, whose off-the-wall takes on the struggles of womanhood and dating in the modern world are sure to have you howling, cringing and possibly even resonating.

To close the night, a Surprise Guest Legendary Bristolian DJ will give an exclusive post-show DJ set, showcasing the very best cuts of the world famous Bristol Sound.

And as usual, Riot Act Chief Rioter and instigator, Bristolian poet Samuel L Cohen aka Wax Lyrical, (2023 Womad Poetry Slam Champion) joins forces with North Bristol's very own microphone miscreant Rob MC to host a night of uplifting, high octane fun.

Sam says:  'My mission is to celebrate the people of our city and their stories across all mediums. I’ve met so many amazing performers in the last few years who don’t get the exposure that they deserve; so I’ve set up the monthly Riot Act events (at the end of each month) to redress the balance.’

Doors open at 6.30pm sharp, at which point Open Mic slots of 4 minutes each will open to all comers, whilst time allows; the show starts at 7.15pm.

This venue has no lower age restrictions but each under 18 has to be accompanied by an adult over 21yrs.

Tickets range from £8 to £10 and are available online via Headfirst
