War Horse tells the wondrous tale of young Albert and his horse Joey. Set against the ominous backdrop of the First World War, this touchingly moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness with stirring music and songs as well as the famous horse puppets.

This groundbreaking puppetry work is from South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping and charging horses to life in a thrilling manner on the stage. Since War Horse’s premiere in 2007, these magnificent beasts have inspired a new generation of theatre-makers.

At the outbreak of the war, Joey the horse is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. He gets caught up in enemy fire and fate takes him on a stunning journey, serving both sides before finding himself stranded in No Man’s Land. Meanwhile, Albert cannot forget Joey and, though not old enough, enlists and embarks on his own treacherous mission.

This upcoming tour of War Horse marks 110 years since the start of the First World War and follows the 40th anniversary of the publication of Michael Morpurgo’s best-selling novel, which has sold over 2 million copies worldwide in 44 languages. The new tour is co-produced by Michael Harrison, Fiery Angel, and Playing Field.

War Horse runs at The Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 3 until Saturday 21 June 2025 – secure your tickets HERE.
