Afrika Eye Festivals unveils a new look programme for 2024

Posted on: 06 Sep 2024

The annual Bristol festival of cinema and culture rooted in Africa and its diaspora will re-appear in an all-new format this autumn.

Afrika Eye 2024 will take place at various venues throughout October 2024.

This new-style programme of film, arts and culture will offer a diverse range of under-the-stars screenings on staggered dates instead of packing the programme into a single week. Enjoy everything from ‘women in action’ films and topical drama-documentaries, to gorgeous animations.

Find out more from the Afrika Eye website.

Screening on Saturday (7 PM) will be The Woman King, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Viola Davis-starring multi-award winning 2022 feature, inspired by true stories about an all-female fighting force that defended the Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin) during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Sunday features two ‘blaxploitation’ classics featuring Pam Grier. Showing at 6 PM is Foxy Brown (1974) in which Grier’s character goes undercover to exact revenge on mobsters while at 8 PM Coffy (1973) sees Grier living a double life, tracking down drug dealers – blankets and warm drinks will also be provided.

On Monday 14, we will see a children’s programme take over the Pickle Factory. Beginning at 11 AM, under 11s can enjoy beautiful animation Zafara, accompanied by hot chocolate, marshmallows and popcorn. This will be followed on Sunday 27 with an U13s Halloween-themed bill at The Pickle Factory.

On Saturday 26, Afrika Eye partners with Watershed to present Dahomey, the latest drama-doc from Cannes Grand Prix winner Mati Diop about the return of stolen artefacts from a French museum to Benin. The screening will be followed by a topical discussion.

Watershed will also host an Afrika Eye double bill on Saturday 16 November with two of the latest films to come out of Africa as well as a repeat of Afrika Eye’s now legendary live music sessions in the café bar.
