Celebrate our city’s incredible maritime culture at The Bristol Shanty Festival

Posted on: 14 Aug 2024

Next month will see this rich history shown off across two nautical miles of harbourside, with a great atmosphere and so many places to visit, eat and drink along the way!

The Bristol Sea Shanty Festival takes over Bristol Harbourside on Saturday 21 September 2024.

Bristol has more salty singing talent than any other city in the UK, as well as the best sea shanty crews, choirs and groups located in counties just a day’s sail away. Given this abundance of expertise, it’s a no-brainer to have a FREE annual maritime music celebration – courtesy of local shantymen, High and Dry.

Browse the programme on the festival website.

Sea shanty experts will be performing across all seven of the festival venues from 12 PM through to 6 PM, with further evening sessions taking place at Underfall Yard and MV Balmoral. The full programme is still being finalised, so keep an eye out on the festival website.

That being said, there will be confirmed sets from favourites including Salisbury’a all-women group All At Sea, Fire and Ice (1915), Somerset’s High and Dry, pandemic born Out of Tuna, Bristol folk-rockers Piratitude, Poole Me Hearties, traditional group Port of Bristol Shanty Crew and more.

The venues along Bristol’s historic harbourside involved in the festival are all either overlooking the water or even floating on it. The locations of this year’s festival are Brunel Square (Main Stage), Underfall Yard, MV Balmoral, The Junction, Arnolfini, The L Shed and The Shakespeare.

This wonderful annual event offers 50 sets of nautical numbers, performed by a slew of talented performers, all for free. However, throughout the day there will be charity collections so please show your appreciation and give generously where possible.
