A show currently taking the Edinburgh Fringe by storm is coming to Bristol!

Posted on: 13 Aug 2024

September will see Kelly Jones’ acclaimed play head to Bristol following rave reviews at The Fringe, with WhatsOnStage calling it “incredibly witty and punchily crafted”.

My Mother’s Funeral: The Show will run at Bristol Old Vic’s Weston Studio from Tuesday 24 until Saturday 28 September 2024.

‘Abigail’s mum is dead. But it turns out she can’t afford her to be’. Dubbed by The New York Times as “what to see at the Edinburgh Fringe” and lauded by the likes of The Guardian and The Stage for its run in Auld Reekie, Kelly Jones’ stunning new play is sure to prove popular when it hits Bristol Old Vic next month.

Did you know how expensive it is to die? It’s £4,000 for the funeral, extra for the flowers, and even more if you want sausage rolls. Otherwise, Abigail’s mum will get a council funeral and an unmarked grave.

Then, when a theatre suddenly pulls out of Abigail’s new project, she is asked to write about something else. Something rawer, something from her ‘unique working class lens’, something that will make audiences feel really, really bad about themselves. Audiences like that, apparently.

Yep, that’s right. To afford the funeral, she has to write about her mum. With great power and playfulness, playwright Kelly Jones’ new piece tackles the inequalities around death, and the cost of turning your loved ones into art.

As ever, the Weston Studio has a programme packed with the very best rising theatrical talent including another Fringe favourite in Documental Theatre’s Scaffolding, Nathan queeley-Dennis’ award-winning debut Bullring Techno Makeout Jamz and in-house Christmas show Little Red (& Other Winter Tales).
