Posted on: 06 Aug 2024

With the world-famous Balloon Fiesta just around the corner, Bristolian eyes are now turning towards the skies – and our city’s rich ballooning history.

‘Look Up! The Story of Hot Air Ballooning in Bristol’ runs at Aerospace Bristol until Sunday 1 September 2024.

Aerospace Bristol has teamed up with Cameron Balloons to explore how hot air ballooning took off in Bristol, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how these airships are made and a chance to get involved in a basketful of ballooning events and activities. All this amazing hot air balloon-themed fun is included FREE with museum admission!

Fun family activities take place and include an opportunity for budding artists and ballooning enthusiasts alike to design their very own hot air balloons with Cameron Balloons’ interactive SkySketcher tool. There will also be a chance to colour in your own chalk balloons or enjoy The Floating on Air science show!

Some of the exhibition’s intriguing exhibits include Britain’s first modern hot air balloon The Bristol Belle, balloon baskets and burners, the chance to explore the inside of a balloon, fabrics and parts from the balloon that made the first non-stop around-the-world flight, objects from the British Balloon Museum & Library and plenty more.

Enthusiasts can also join Aerospace Bristol’s Virtual Balloon Race. With all funds raised supporting the Engineering Futures Appeal, donate to buy a balloon and see if yours can soar to victory. Prizes include a hot air balloon ride, a LEGO Concorde and more.

Visit Aerospace Bristol this week to get yourself in the mood for Bristol Balloon Fiesta, which once more takes over Ashton Court Estate this weekend, filling the sky above our city with vibrant balloons of all shapes and sizes.
