The hidden screenings of cult films in one of Bristol’s favourite pubs

Posted on: 27 Jun 2024

One of Old Market’s favourite pubs is hosting free cult film screenings in its basement – and they’re absolutely Divine.

Be Kind Rewind is an underground (literally) film screening club – located in the basement of Old Market’s Ill Repute pub, they screen repertory, cult cinema from the shocking to the hilarious, all within the cosy confines of the Ill Repute’s dive bar Americana atmosphere.

Screenings range across genre & time, from the 1999 queer romcom classic But I’m a Cheerleader, to celebrated indie road drama Easy Rider (shown in an ‘Acid Double’ bill with Roger Corman’s groundbreaking 60s drug film The Trip).

Tonight, Thursday June 27, Be Kind Rewind will screen John Waters’ counterculture sensation Pink Flamingos. A gleeful assault on the sensibilities and propriety of any cinemagoer, Pink Flamingos sees criminal protagonist Babs Johnson (played by countercultural drag queen Divine) leave no taboo unsmashed.

Occasionally, Be Kind Rewind also do ‘mystery screenings’ – an opportunity to take a chance, and roll the dice of film fate; perfect if you want to get stuck into cult film history, but have no idea what screening to start with – or if you just want to give a chance to a film you wouldn’t usually watch!

The Ill Repute is a veteran pub of Old Market – idiosyncratically decorated with Americana dive bar trappings, they’re known for their live gigs, excellent selection of craft beers from local breweries and further afield, ice-cold margaritas – and top notch food. That’s not even to mention the Elvis-themed toilet!

Tickets to Be Kind Rewind are free, but donations are warmly accepted. For more information on Be Kind Rewind, check out their linktree, or follow them on social media. Tickets for tonight’s screening are sold out, but in the future they can be found on Headfirst.
