Lauded for their effortless ability to synthesise their traditional folk approach with jazz, ambient post rock and more, The Unthanks are back with a new album, In Winter.

The Unthanks will play Bristol Beacon’s Beacon Hall on Thursday 19 December 2024.

With the traditional music of the North-East of England as their base, The Unthanks’ disparate influences including Miles Davis, Sufjan Stevens, Robert Wyatt, Tom Waits and King Crimson make them one of the country’s most unique bands, earning them a Mercury Prize nomination and international acclaim along the way.

Formed in 2004 by sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank in Northumberland, The Unthanks initially gained recognition for their heartfelt renditions of traditional folk songs. Over the years, the band have seamlessly fused other musical elements into their repertoire, solidifying their status as one of contemporary folk’s most innovative acts.

When December draws near, the band will release and tour In Winter, a double album, gatefold, dream-like winter fantasia that embraces the dark as well as the light in the most ritualistic of seasons.

The record moves in and out of focus like a memory, a bittersweet hymnal to our shared experience of winter. Throughout In Winter, there are echoes of tunes known throughout the Western world, mixed with the traditional and newly written, all passed with care and love through The Unthanks’ unique gaze.

In Winter is an abstract new album that perfectly captures the warmth and nostalgia of the festive season, the chill and darkness of winter months and the reflective ritualism of the turn of the year – the beginnings and ends of the circle of life.

The Unthanks will play Bristol Beacon’s Beacon Hall on Thursday 19 December 2024 with general sale tickets available to purchase from Friday 10 May 2024 – purchase your tickets HERE.
