Exchange to start a PWYC horror movie club next month

Exchange, a community-benefit punk venue on Old Market, are starting a film club next month – and tickets are pay-what-you-can.

Exchange is a not-for-profit venue and Community Benefit Society based out of venue-haven Old Market – they host a variety of gigs and clubnights from across genres, but have something of an emphasis on punk, rock and metal. However, Exchange also have regular arts and daytime events: From flea markets to events like the Anarchist Book Fair, it’s always an eclectic programme of events, with a real community focus – and that programme of events has just gotten one bigger.

As of the start of next month, Sunday 5 May, Exchange will hold the first in a series of horror movie screenings under the name of Exchange Horror Club – and the inaugural edition of Exchange Horror Club will be screening a John Carpenter classic: The Thing (1982).

The Thing is a cult masterpiece that unites cosmic horror, psychological horror, and good-old-fashioned monster horror with a truly legendary commitment to imaginative practical effects. Set in an Antarctic research base, The Thing tells the (possibly true? Who knows) story of a shapeshifting alien intelligence that picks off the isolated humans of the base one by one.

The screening is entirely pay-what-you-can; although there is a suggested minimum ticket price of £5, no one will be turned away for lack of funds, and tickets can be picked up for free. However, all profits made from the screening will go straight to South & East Bristol Foodbank – and Exchange will also be collecting food bank donations on the day, so even if you can’t afford a ticket, it’s worth bringing something along – read what food they need here.

The first entry in the Exchange Horror Club takes place in just a few weeks, on Sunday 5 May at 13:30. For tickets, head to Exchange’s website, or to learn more about South & East Bristol Foodbank, head here.
