THIS SUNDAY: Celebrate 50 years of hip hop at one of Bristol’s most iconic venues

Trinity Centre are running a massive party this weekend to recognise and celebrate half a decade of one of the world’s favourite music genres, and Bristol’s role in the scene.

 

‘Hip-Hop at 50’ will take over Bristol’s Trinity Centre on Sunday 21 April 2024.

 

Hip-hop heads can expect an all-day celebration jam-packed with unique and exciting events from paint parties to panel discussions, workshops to 90-minute dance sessions as Hip-Hop at 50, Arts Council England and Trinity join together for a rap party like no other.

The hip hop paint party will be delivered by visual artist Sal Freckles from Seduced by Art who is part of the UK-wide event’s touring team. Attendees will be guided through creating a hip-hop-inspired artwork using acrylic paint on canvas. All artistic abilities are welcome, and you will be accompanied by a DJ bringing a party vibe to the art session!

 

Hosting a ‘Respect The DJ’ panel discussion and workshop will be Cutmaster Swift (DMC World Champion/four times UK champion). He will be joined by an esteemed panel of credible DJs and a Vinyl Battle DJ exhibition. The panel will discuss topical talking points on their craft while a workshop section will offer a hands-on experience.

 

Another panel, ‘Hip Hop (A Different Perspective)’, will be hosted by DJ Pogo and discuss the origins of the culture in Bristol and the UK. It will aim to give a real insight into the scene in the 70s and 80s and the hip hop movement in general with various guests, key to the development of the genre.

 

The ‘So, you’re a Rapper?’ panel will be hosted by MOBO winner Funky DL, who has produced, rapped and released over 20 albums independently, acquiring millions of streams in the process. Along with special guests, he will discuss the art rap, concepts, songwriting and industry dos and don’ts.

 

Finally, attendees will be treated to a fun 90-minute dance session hosted by Sam Samurai and Poppin Jutsu which will cover street dance, poppin, locking and top rock breakdance move. During session breaks, an experienced beatboxer will be performing, detailing how different sounds are created.
