Posted on: 12 Apr 2024

Taking place at the cult film specialists’ regular home The Ill Repute, Cultura Film Festival will celebrate the unique and diverse world of cult film.

Be Kind Rewind’s Cultura Film Festival will take place at The Ill Repute, Old Market on Saturday 6 July 2024.

Calling all Bristolian film enthusiasts, this brand-new festival will feature an exciting programme of weird and wonderful films across two floors with a dreamlike body horror, a satirical melodrama, an off-kilter romance and much more – including some screenings still to be announced.

General entry tickets are priced at just £1.50 and cover three upstairs screenings yet to be announced, taking place at 1 PM, 2.45 PM and 4.45 PM. Tickets for the four downstairs screenings also cover the upstairs screenings, read on for details of those…

At 2 PM, attendees will be treated to Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 film, House. At once absurd and nightmarish, this hallucinatory head trip brings a schoolgirl face to face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano and other ghoulish visions.

3.30 PM will see a screening of Harold and Maude (1971), Hal Ashby’s idiosyncratic American fable. A true cult favourite of its era, this humorous romance between a death-obsessed young man and bohemian octogenarian dissolves the line between darkness and light – set to a remarkable soundtrack from Cat Stevens.

David Lynch’s debut feature Eraserhead (1977) will show at 5.30 PM. It is a smash hit cult sensation, made with extraordinary craft and beauty filmed in mesmerising black and white and complete with evocative sound design and an enigmatic performance from Jack Nance.

Closing the festival at 7.15 PM is Beyond The Valley of the Dolls (1970), this transgressive and outrageous flick follows three young female rockers as they head to Hollywood, under the spell of a flamboyant producer – a truly transgressive midnight movie from Russ Meyer, one of cinema’s great outsiders.
