An exciting new show from Stan’s Café is soon to open at Tobacco Factory

Posted on: 11 Apr 2024

From internationally acclaimed local company Stan’s Café, Community Service is set in the Midlands during the 1980s and draws on themes such as politics and racism.

Community Service runs at Tobacco Factory Theatres from Tuesday 23 until Saturday 27 April 2024.

It’s the 80s. One of the Midland’s first Black police officers – who also happens to be an acclaimed gospel guitarist – faces conflict on the street, at work and in the church. To bring harmony to all this discord he must find the spirit behind the letter of the law – hurry, tickets are flying out fast!

Inspired by the real-life story of community hero Trevor Prince, Community Service is an emotional and uplifting piece of theatre that is full of live music and wit. It is set to a backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain, the Handsworth Riots, miner’s strikes and casual racism.

At the same time, in the Pentecostal Church a schism is being questioned by children who are listening to secular music on the radio and rebelling against the austere rules of their immigrant parents – how will this all end up?

This new play is the brainchild of internationally acclaimed local company Stan’s Café Theatre Company with Reisz Amos (AKA Odd Priest), DJ and Choreographer Paul ‘Steady’ Steadman and a talented team of actors and musicians.

Formed in the early 90s, Stan’s Café is a company and charity made up of a group of artists from a variety of disciplines, mostly theatre makers, working under the artistic direction of James Yarker. The company is made up of an evolving team of collaborators and artists and does a great deal of community work.
