Visitors of all ages will be able to discover SS Great Britain’s special Wardian Cases - Victorian glasshouses used to transport plants over long distances, often for maritime use – as they become a new permanent exhibition on the ship’s weather deck.
There will also be the opportunity to head below deck to explore Thomas Lang’s cabin and find out what life was like for the many passengers who travelled aboard the SS Great Britain, from Nurseryman to Thomas Lang!
Youngsters can also become a Plant Hunter this Easter, tracking down exotic ferns with a ‘Fern-tastic’ family trail in, around and under the ship. Work together as you step into the shoes of a Victorian Plant Hunter, unearthing links between plants and historic steamships like the SS Great Britain. Can you track down all the ferns?
Designed by legendary Bristol engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the SS Great Britain was a passenger steamship way ahead of its time that was in service between 1845 and 1886. In 1970, the SS Great Britain Project brought the ship’s rusting shell home from the Falkland Island, keeping its history alive.
