The Wurzels’ Xmas show is back and tickets are running low!

Known as pioneers of the Scrumpy n’ Western genre, The West Country legends are back at The Fleece this festive period – providing the perfect accompaniment to cider drinking.

 

The Wurzels Xmas Show will take over The Fleece on Tuesday 5 November 2023.

 

This immensely popular annual event always promises to be a riotous affair with double entendre, mainstream parody (their quintessentially West Country cover of Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Ruby’ is a particular favourite) and a comical folk style. Tickets are on the brink of selling out so make sure you grab yours while you still can!

The Wurzels formed in 1966 as the backup band for Adge Cutler, a folk singer-songwriter from Portishead whose songs would tell tales of cider making (and drinking), farming, industrial labour and the West Country area – often with strong comedic undertones.

 

That same year, the band recorded their debut record, a live album, at The Royal Oak Inn in Nailsea. It proved a tremendous success locally and the sing-along sensation ‘Drink Up Thy Cider’ went one step further, reaching number 45 in the UK charts and propelling The Wurzels into stardom!

 

Now a favourite of the UK live circuit, their newfound popularity saw them embark on various UK tours and even appear on TV on more than one occasion. However, tragedy hit in 1974 when witty Somerset icon Adge Cutter died in a traffic accident.

Determined to continue their frontman’s legacy, the remaining Wurzels (Tommy Banner, Pete Budd and Tony Baylis) picked up where they left off and, in 1976, their song ‘The Combine Harvester’ was picked up by then BBC Radio 1 DJ Noel Edmonds and, within a week, it was topping the UK charts!

 

Their follow-up, ‘Cider Drinker’ - with its witty line “When the moon shines on the cowshed” that plays on ‘Una Paloma Blanca’ – was also a success, selling more than 250,000 copies. As a result of this prominence, The Wurzels were regulars at UK venues as well as on TV and radio throughout the 70s.

 

The proceeding years saw The Wurzels tour all over the world and they’re still flying high today! Playing over 100 shows a year, the group have released a slew of successful (and hilarious) cover albums featuring the likes of Oasis’ ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ and have recorded a much-loved charity football anthem, ‘One For The Bristol City’.
