Prohibition era parties and venues have become something of a fixture of the UK’s nightlife scene with the likes Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and smash hit BBC series Peaky Blinders leaving lasting cultural imprints.

In Bristol alone, Park Street’s Gatsby’s, Gloucester Road’s The Bootlegger and Bessell Scotts: House of Jazz on East Street have taken on the theme of a 20s-themed speakeasy. All these venues have partnered their en vogue concepts with the serving of cocktails or themed dishes.

The popularity of the Prohibition era style can be traced back to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s legendary work The Great Gatsby. The opulent 1925 novel, set in the Jazz Age of Long Island, follows first person narrator Nick Carraway and his strange relationship with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his mad, lavish world.
