Posted on: 21 Aug 2023

The Cave Art of Lascaux exhibition has been running in Bristol since April, allowing visitors to step back in time 21,000 years to experience the marvels of Stone Age cave art.

Visit The Cave Art of Lascaux: a Virtual Reality Experience at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery until Sunday 10 September 2023.

This brilliant virtual reality exhibition brings to life the beauty of the Lascaux cave art using immersive 3D with tickets available from £15 for adults, £10 for children/concession tickets with family passes also available. Secure your tickets before it’s too late HERE.

Lascaux is a world heritage site in the Dordogne, France, discovered way back in 1940 by two teenagers. The cave’s etchings depict many animals of various sizes including bison, horses, ibex, large cats and even a rhinoceros as well as various mysterious symbols and abstract elements.

For decades, experts from all over the world have researched and analysed the images, working out how they were made and what they might mine. The site itself has been closed to the public since 1963 but there is a full-size replica in France.

Now, however, the caves have been transported to South-West England. Visitors to Bristol Museum can explore the drawings in detail and learn how they were discovered, preserved and recreated. Discover ‘invisible engravings and hear the site’s original purpose.

Alongside the virtual reality experience, the exhibition features displays on Cro-Magnon (early European modern human) life and culture with replicas of objects ground on the cave floor as well as stunning life-size sculptures.

Children under 12 must be accompanied at all time by adults with the age recommendation being 10+ - although younger children can enter.
