Beyond Submergence opens to the public at Propyard on Saturday 1 July 2023.

Featuring a retrospective exhibition of Squidsoup’s legendary light and sound installations on a massive scale, Beyond Submergence has taken over the expansive industrial space of Propyard – and we got early access! Read on for a glimpse into this extraordinary spectacle.

To book tickets for Beyond Submergence, visit the Propyard website.

Squidsoup’s brand new exhibition sees the collective utilise light, space, sound, scale, movement, and technology to emit an emotional response from its visitors.

The installation begins with ‘Granularities’, a series of wall art pieces that use Musou Black, a paint that absorbs as much as 99.4% of reflected light, giving the space an overwhelming blackness. This flat darkness, set against a bright white backdrop gives the space a hypnotic juxtaposition of absorption and reflection.

A miniature spectacle, ‘Aurora’ uses the world’s lightest solid Aerogel (used by NASA to collect space dust) to create an ethereal exhibit that is beguiling and beautiful. Embodying both digital and physical material, this piece evokes images of nature’s wonders, from icebergs to the Northern Lights.

Welcoming visitors just outside the exhibition space is ‘Collective Isolation’, where an array of sound and light features will give you a moment to collect your thoughts before entering and give a small hint of what’s to come.

Then, as you step into the dark space, you will be greeted by ‘Circular Echoes’, a circular form that symbolises wholeness, providing an endless line without beginning or end. Is it representing of freedom? Or is it a border across which we cannot travel?

Next up, ‘Wave’ is made up of five hundred individual orbs, suspended from the ceiling. The piece is brought to life through both light and sound, combining to create a dynamic audio-visual experience. Each orb resonates with changing harmonies, cultivating an enveloping and entrancing experience.

‘Phase Shifter’ is sure to amaze and disorientate with its impressive blend of movement, sound, and light. An ever-shifting audio-visual landscape, the piece consists of sixteen moving sound and light sources, creating a transcendent and immersive soundscape.

Squidsoup’s renowned ‘Submergence’ is also located in the huge industrial space, inviting visitors to walk through and experience it from every possible angle. This hybrid environment is where the virtual and physical coincide – it’s a truly unique experience!

Finally, the exhibition features the largest installation of Squidsoup’s brand new ‘Sola’ exhibit. Consisting of a wall of Fresnel lenses and bright LED lights, this piece depicts the distant yet all-powerful sun, controlling clouds alongside a heavy, awe-inspiring drone.

Beyond Submergence is a unique experience right at the heart of Bristol. Affordable tickets begin at £15 for adults and £35 for a family with the exhibition opening on Saturday 1 July 2023. Secure your tickets to the experience HERE.
