Legendary Christmas tale is being brought to the stage in Bristol later this year

November sees BLOC Productions make their long-awaited return to The Bristol Hippodrome with Alan Menken’s celebrated musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

 

A Christmas Carol The Musical runs at The Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 14 until Saturday 18 November 2023.

 

Adapted from Charles Dickens’ seminal text, Alan Menken’s highly acclaimed musical was originally presented at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden and features lyrics from Lynn Ahrens and a book from Mike Ockrent and Lynn Ahrens.

This show is sure to get musical fans into the Christmas spirit as we follow Scrooge’s journey from an emotionally deprived, miserable man all the way to redemption where his heart opens up to the world around him; along the way, we meet the Cratchit family, the three prophetic ghosts and revel at Fezziwig’s Ball.

 

However, while this epic production does stick to Dickens’ original novel in the main, it also tells the familiar story in a fresh, lively and dramatic visual manner. The city of London becomes one of the main features, introducing a host of colourful characters depicting the rich and the poor, and everyone in between, as they celebrate Christmas.

 

The production's upbeat, lively score is reminiscent of legendary American composer, pianist, singer and musical director Alan Menken’s early work for Disney and ‘A Christmas Carol The Musical’ was written whilst he was also composing scores for the likes of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas. 

 

Prestigious publication Variety gave the show rave reviews in 2004, saying: “In the numbers 'Abundance', 'Charity' and 'Christmas Together', with their dancing Christmas presents and loopily syncopated revellers, there’s more than a tip of the hat to the Rockettes.” (Variety)

 

BLOC Productions have a rich reputation for spectacular shows at The Bristol Hippodrome: their last show, Elf – The Musical proved a smash-hit sell out and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang won the Rose Bowl for Best Musical.
