Born in LA back in 1940, Ayers’ deep affinity with music came naturally as he was brought up in a household filled with music. By the age of five, he was playing boogie woogie tunes on the piano and steel guitar, flute trumpet and drums soon followed.

However, it was the vibraphone that a young Ayers truly mastered, working independently and under the tutelage of his neighbour Bobby Hutcherson. By 1961, he had become a fully-fledged professional musician, collaborating with the likes of Chico Hamilton, Jack Wilson, Phineas Newborn and Gerald Wilson.

Ayers never looked back, becoming known as the Godfather of neo-soul and the man that bridged the gap between generations of music lovers. In the 60s, he became an award-winning jazz vibraphonist before transforming into a popular R&B band leader in the 70s and 80s with Roy Ayers’ Ubiquity.

The 80-year-old has left a lasting imprint on modern music culture, with the iconic figure’s music being sampled by industry heavyweights such as Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, A Tribe Called Quest and Ice Cube. He has also featured on tracks with massive artists including Tyler, The Creator and Talib Kweli.

With a stellar career in music under his belt, Roy Ayers is heading out on one final tour – and everyone’s invited!
