Best known for roles in television shows like Red Dwarf and Coronation Street as well as being a prominent TV host, in 2021 Charles took over Sean Keaveny's prime-time BBC Radio 6 slot in addition to long-standing and much-loved Saturday evening funk and soul show.

After beginning a show business career as a politically charged performance poet before turning to comedy with the Red Wedge comedy tour in 1986, Charles originally stamped his mark on British performing spoken word poetry and stand-up comedy.

The now 58-year-old soon burst onto TV screens with the cheeky Liverpudlian soon winning the hearts of the British public as lager-loving Dave in the beloved Red Dwarf series.

In addition to prestigious acting roles in Red Dwarf and Coronation Street, Charles has been a presenter on a number of much-loved shows over the years, from cult hit Robot Wars to Channel 5’s The Gadget Show.

Charles' Funk and Soul show on BBC 6 Music has been a firm favourite with music fans for some time, with the set becoming a fully-fledged regular club night. The success of the show has also led to Charles claiming the headline prime-time spot on the radio station.

Thanks to this success, Charles has garnered a reputation as an experienced disc jockey with an unrivalled knowledge of funk, soul and disco. An enthusiastic music lover, he is most at home when commanding a massive crowd – something he’ll be doing tomorrow night!
