From his debut short film, The Alphabet, to his latest on-screen creation, Twin Peaks: The Return, the themes, images and cultural vernacular of Victor Fleming’s seminal movie The Wizard of Oz has continued to inform and haunt the world of David Lynch.

Lynch/Oz is an essay film that argues no one filmmaker has been so inspired (whether that be consciously or unconsciously) by a single work. The documentary goes over the rainbow into the mind and work of the auteur to take a closer look at Lynch’s relationship with one of his most enduring obsessions.

In the film, the audience hears six distinct perspectives from the likes of cult filmmakers John Walters (Hairspray, Pink Flamingos, Cry-Baby) and Karyn Kusama (Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation) to help provide fresh insight into Lynch’s symbolism through the lens of The Wizard of Oz.

Hailing from Missoula, Montana, David Lynch’s surreal and avant-garde approach to film and television has made him one of the most important contemporary filmmakers.

His most notable films include surrealist horror Eraserhead (1977), John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins starring The Elephant Man (1980), sci-fi epic Dune (1984), neo-noir Blue Velvet (1986) and psychological thriller Mulholland Drive (2001) – which saw Lynch win Best Director at both the Cannes Film Festival and The Oscars.

Lynch has also worked successfully in television with the cult classic crime mystery Twin Peaks, which originally ran between 1990 and 1991 with the prequel feature film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me coming out the following year. The show returned for a single series in 2017 with much of the original cast returning.

Following its critically acclaimed release last week, Lynch/Oz will screen at The Cube at 8 PM on Tuesday 13 December. Tickets are priced at £5, purchase yours here.
