The much-anticipated debut of the theatre’s star-studded production of Shakespeare’s tragedy, directed by John Haider, has already sold its opening night on Wednesday 19 October.

Bristol Old Vic’s Hamlet runs from Wednesday 19 October until Saturday 12 November with a run of five preview nights beginning on Thursday 13 October with prices beginning at £3.

Haidar’s production stars rising talent Billy Howle (The Serpent, MotherFatherSon, On Chesil Beach) in the titular role with a slew of recognisable faces featuring in this visceral showing of one of the bard’s most well-loved plays.

Tickets for the run can be found here.

With his father dead and his mother remarried to his father’s brother, Hamlet is left alone with his dark thoughts. Haunted by all-consuming grief in a world that is falling apart around him, the young prince has some decisions to make: forget or remember; live or die.

The upcoming Bristol Old Vic is directed by John Haider; graduating from RADA in 2013, his previous credits include Disco Pigs (Trafalgar Studios and later Irish Repertory Theatre, New York) and Richard III (Alexandra Palace Theatre).

Haider’s grim production of Hamlet focuses on the dark subconscious of the play with Billy Howle (pictured below) seemingly perfect to take on the lead role. Howle, a graduate from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School has garnered a reputation as an actor who thrives on immersing himself in the darker roles.

The rising star has already drawn critical praise for his performances alongside Saoirse Ronan in the film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s On Chesil Beach and alongside Richard Gere and Helen McCrory in the BBC’s MotherFatherSon.

Howle is supported in Bristol by a talent-heavy cast. First up is Niamh Cusack (pictured below) as Gertrude, a regular in almost every National Theatre production over the past few decades, Cusack has also appeared in Shane Meadows’ The Virtues and popular 90s series, Heartbeat.

Bristol theatregoers will also witness Sex Education and The Nest star Mirren Mack take on the role of Ophelia, experienced theatre actor and previous Tony Award nominee Finbar Lynch will play Claudius and The Bay star Taheen Modak will take the roles of Laertes and Rosencrantz.

Hamlet runs at Bristol Old Vic from Monday 17 October until Saturday 12 November.

Previews will be taking place each day from Thursday 13 until Tuesday 18 October, with tickets available from £3. Tickets can be found on the Bristol Old Vic website.
