The Matthew of Bristol is heading out on a series of boat trips

Posted on: 15 Aug 2022

The modern recreation of John Cabot’s famous vessel has a whole range of different boat trips suitable for all the family.

As well as offering four different public boat trips, The Matthew is available for private hire.

With regular excursions taking place every week as well as a special musical event, the team behind the reconstruction run a classic ‘Harbour Trip’, an ‘Avon Gorge Cruise’ and a very special ‘Fish and Chips Trip’.

Tickets for all these trips can be found on The Matthew of Bristol website.

The original Matthew gained recognition in 1497 as the caravel sailed by Italian navigator and explorer John Cabot from Bristol harbourside to Newfoundland, North America on a journey that was originally supposed to take Cabot and his 18-man crew to Asia.

To celebrate the voyage’s 500th anniversary, a replica was built and moored at Bristol’s historic harbourside before recreating The Matthew’s original journey, being welcomed by Queen Elizabeth II at Bonavista where there is also a second replica.

Still located at Bristol Harbourside, today The Matthew offers visitors a whole range of exciting trips around the city.

The regular Fish and Chips Trips are particularly popular events with fresh fish and chips delivered to visitors on deck as the boat moors at The Pumphouse. The trip takes two hours in all with adult tickets priced at £30, food included. Head to the website for more information. https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/fish-chips-trips-82509

Another regular trip is the Avon Gorge Cruise; leaving the Floating Harbour through Junction Lock, this three-to-four-hour journey takes you under the Suspension Bridge and along the Avon Gorge before heading back. Adult tickets are £40, head to the website to book yours and find out more.

There is also the shorter Harbour Trip; a cruise around the historic harbourside of Bristol, ticket holders can experience the beauty of the city in a completely new way during this 45-to-50-minute trip. Adult tickets are priced at £12.50. More information can be found online.

Perhaps The Matthew’s most popular offering is the Sea Shanties Fish and Chips Trip which mixes their fish and chips events with live musical accompaniment from one of The Matthew’s resident Sea Shanty groups. The only currently scheduled event is currently sold out but be sure to keep an eye on the Eventbrite page for the next one.

More information about The Matthew of Bristol’s trips can be found on the website as well as details about private hire and school trips.
