Katy J Pearson releases sophomore album, Sound of the Morning

Posted on: 08 Jul 2022

The 11-track record arrives as a follow-up to Pearson's critically-acclaimed 2020 debut, Return.

Bristol-based singer-songwriter Katy J Pearson has today (Friday 8 July) released her second studio album, Sound of the Morning, further demonstrating her stellar songwriting capabilities and building on her stripped-back folk sound.

The eagerly-anticipated new project, released via Heavenly Recordings, comes off the back of a joyous performance at Glastonbury last month, and follows on from Pearson's acclaimed 2020 debut, Return.

Sound of the Morning is available on all major streaming platforms, with physical copies and downloads also up for grabs on Bandcamp.

Written and recorded in late 2021, Sound of the Morning represents a fully-fledged return to form for Katy J Pearson, pushing her refreshingly charming style into new territories and delving into a darker side to her songwriting.

The album spans a range of genres and influences, traversing folk, country, indie-pop and more on standout tracks 'Alligator', 'Talk Over Town' and 'Float', buoyed by Pearson's effortless, disarmingly familiar charm.

Speaking ahead of its release, the adopted Bristolian outlined her commitment to exploring a broader range of topics and emotions than on previous projects, noting that she “strives for the bittersweetness of things” in her music.

“I want people to feel things, but I don’t want to cause my listener too much trauma,” she explained. “Counselling is expensive, so you’ve got to pick your battles…”

The record was co-produced by frequent collaborator Ali Chant, as well as Speedy Wunderground boss Dan Carey, the latter noted for his work on Fontaines DC's seminal 2019 debut, Dogrel.

Katy J Pearson has gone from strength to strength since emerging in Bristol in the late 2010s, transcending her 'one to watch' status on the local scene to become a nationally-renowned up-and-comer.

A string of well-received pre-pandemic shows at venues across the city have acted as a precursor to major support slots and a headline UK tour more recently, as well as a handful of festival performances in front of growing crowds.

Pearson's debut, Return, gave the UK its first proper glimpse of her emotive storytelling and country-tinged sensibilities, receiving praise from a number of major titles, including The Times, The Guardian and DIY among others.

When we caught up with her in early 2020 as part of LOUD Bristol Issue Two, Pearson was eagerly preparing for the release of her first-ever full-length album.

“I'm so excited to release this piece of work because I'm excited to move on and see what I write next,” she said of Return at the time, inadvertently foreshadowing this summer's sophomore release.

“I've been holding onto these songs for such a long time. There's just so much more to come.”

Sound of the Morning is out now and available on all platforms. Stream the album via Spotify or purchase a physical or digital copy via Bandcamp.
