Bristol venue SWX announce reopening plans following 2021 arson attack

Posted on: 04 Jul 2022

The Nelson Street club will be making a welcome return to Bristol's nightlife scene this year.

The team behind much-loved central Bristol venue SWX have confirmed a timeline for their reopening, set to return in September with a brand-new interior and a vibrant programme of live shows and club nights.

Having survived a long period of closure in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, SWX was targeted by an arson attack last summer that resulted in a major fire.

A reopening date for the venue, which has emerged as a staple of Bristol's musical landscape in recent years, has been confirmed for Friday 9 September.

Originally operated by nationwide chain Top Rank, the space was first opened on Nelson Street in 1964, hosting an array of internationally-renowned acts including The Beach Boys and The Faces.

Going on to become an established nightclub venue through the 1970s, 80s, 90s and into the 21st century, the building was acquired by Electric Group and reopened as SWX in 2017 with the aim of becoming a leading touring concert hub for Bristol.

Now, following extensive repairs and refurbishments, SWX is set to reopen with revitalised stage area, toilets and bars, boasting extensive upgrades catering for both artists and guests.

Speaking last week, Electric Group co-founder and CEO Dominic Madden said: “I’m delighted to announce the reopening of our beloved SWX music venue.

“We have used this opportunity to reimagine and upgrade the venue (for example making sure that the venue is more DDA compliant such as installing a disability compliant lift and generally making the main room far more accessible), whilst retaining many of the things that are so loved.

“Our vision is to create a 21st Century club and gig venue which music fans and artists will embrace for the next 50 years.

“I would like to thank all of those in Bristol who have provided so much support to our vision of reopening SWX in the face of many obstacles.”

SWX's reopening season will feature highly-regarded artists from across the UK and beyond, namely Sugabases as the iconic trio head out on their first headline tour in more than 20 years, US rapper Joey Bada$$, London-based rockers Black Midi and more.

An extensive lineup of club nights and DJ sets is expected to land in the coming weeks, complementing a stellar run of live shows.
