Posted on: 13 Jun 2022

The cult indie-pop legends will be returning to the city for the first time since 2015.

In a show that was originally scheduled for 2020, Glasgow’s Belle and Sebastian will be rolling back the years with an anthology of material that spans over 25 years.

Presented by Bristol Beacon but taking place at Bristol Harbourside’s The Amphitheatre on Friday 15 July, the 60s-nodding seven-piece will be welcoming the Mercury-nominated Django Django as support.

Named after a 1965 French children’s book, Belle and Sebastian was formed in Glasgow in 1994. After recording a slew of rough demos before recording their first album Tigermilk in only three days – a record that received remarkable success for a debut record.

The follow-up, If You’re Feeling Sinister, was released in 1996. With its beautifully melancholic brand of chamber pop, the LP is seen widely as the band’s tour de force – an opinion echoed by reclusive frontman, Stuart Murdoch.

The Boy with the Arab Strap (1988) continued this upward trajectory. A more experimental sounding record, it received a great deal of critical success with many publications seeing the title track as Murdoch and co’s finest work.

Belle and Sebastian have gone on to receive multiple awards and nominations (including a Mercury nomination and a BRIT Award for Best Newcomer) and have released eleven studio albums so far, with the most recent being the musically eclectic A Bit of Previous earlier this year.

Throughout their long career, the Scottish collective have garnered a cult following for their poetic, intricately composed brand of indie-pop that owes much to 60s indie and a diverse range of influences including Felt, Nick Drake and The Smiths.

Belle and Sebastian’s appearance in Bristol was a radiant sold out show at Bristol Beacon in 2015 and the City Centre venue is now organising the group’s triumphant return – a special set at the city’s historic harbourside.

The show (that will take place on Friday 15 July) is the perfect complement to Bristol Harbour Festival, celebrating its 50th anniversary between 15 and 17 July. Tickets for Belle and Sebastian’s gig at The Amphitheatre, Bristol Harbourside can be found here.
