The three-day event boasts a diverse lineup of 80s cult classics, with Blade Runner and Mad Max 2 among the screenings.

Organised by beloved Bristol video shop 20th Century Flicks, the brand-new Forbidden Worlds Film Festival is dedicated to screening alternative fantasy, action and science-fiction films from all over the world.

1982 was an important year in film: a plethora of genre classics were released all over the world and 20th Century Flicks was conceived. Now, celebrating its 40th year, the team behind the video shop are bringing an array of exciting movies to Bristol IMAX over three days.

Now situated in Bristol Aquarium, the cinema was opened in 2001 but has been dormant since 2007, making this a rare opportunity to watch some brilliant films on the venue's massive 19m x 15m screen.

There are day passes and individual screening tickets available for the festival, which will be taking place between Friday 13 and Sunday 15 May.

Friday 13 May

Aptly kicking off proceedings at 16:00 on Friday 13 is the Iconic horror Dracula A.D. 1972. Starring the late, great Christopher Lee and showing on what would have been his 100th birthday, the movie sees Bram Stoker’s vampire reappear in 70s London.

At 19:00, there will be a talk by 20th Century Flicks’ Dave Taylor followed by a screening of the genre-defining action film Mad Max 2 starring Mel Gibson.

Concluding the opening day screenings at 22:00 will be Girls Nite Out.  University scavenger hunters go from being hunters to being hunted in this 1982 cult slasher movie.

Saturday 14 May

Saturday sees five events take to the IMAX. 1982 children’s talking mouse classic The Secret of NIMH is being screened at 11AM, followed by a talk on the history of 3D cinema at 14:00. John Frankenheimer’s cult action film, The Challenge, will be shown at 15:30.

Heading into the evening, one of the most iconic films of the 80s, Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist, is being screened at 19:00. Low-budget gory horror, Basket Case, will close Saturday’s proceedings at 21:30.

Sunday 15 May

Beginning the final day at 10:45 is the ground-breaking puppet fantasy classic Dark Crystal.

Moving into the afternoon, Taiwanese brain-melter Thrilling Bloody Sword (13:30) will be followed by the legendary final cut of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi noir masterpiece, Blade Runner (15:30) - this screening is unfortunately sold out.

At 19:15, Forbidden World presents a newly restored version of Tenebrae (poster below), a bloody, gory, and sadistic journey into the mind of director Dario Argento.

Finally, closing the festival at 21:30, is the eponymous film Forbidden World [a.k.a. Mutant] - a beautifully hilarious and sleazy remake knock-off of sci-fi classic, ‘Alien’.

Forbidden Worlds Film Festival runs between 13 and 15 May. Sunday Day Passes and Full Weekend Passes are sold out, however, Friday and Saturday day passes are still available, as are individual screening tickets.

Head to the festival website to get your ticket now.
