Local wildlife experts to host free guided walks around central Bristol

Posted on: 27 Apr 2022

The walks will explore some of Bristol’s hidden green corners, showcasing the exciting nature right on our doorstep.

As part of City Nature Challenge 2022, the Festival of Nature team, Bristol City Centre BID and Redcliffe and Temple BID are running guided walks beginning at Castle Park and Queen Square.

With four walks beginning at Queen Square on Friday 29 and two at Castle Park on Saturday 30 April, attendees will be shown how to record local wildlife for the City Nature Challenge.

The guided walks are free and can be booked now here. Spaces are limited so booking in advance is essential.

Attendees will be taken on a tour around Bristol’s historical city centre, however, city architecture is not the preoccupation of this expedition.

Instead, you'll be delving into everything from wildflowers growing from pavement cracks to beautiful urban birds.

On the Friday, half-hour walks will take place at 08:15, 12:00, 12:30 and 17:30 while, on Saturday, there will be two 45-minute walks at 11:00 and 14:00.

Walks will be led by either local ecologist Cat Baker or naturalist, broadcaster, and author Ed Drewitt.

The walks will not be strenuous and are suitable for everyone, however attendees are advised to dress for the weather and required to bring a smartphone, tablet, or camera to record wildlife.

The free tours will be taking place as part of the City Nature Challenge – a global mission to record as much wildlife as possible.

Taking place between Friday 29 April and Monday 2 May, organisers are encouraging people to share their wildlife sightings from windows, gardens, or local parks.

You are not required to be an expert or even know the species seen, just take a picture and upload it to the free iNaturalist app – available HERE.

The walks are a collaborative project between the Festival of Nature (the UK’s largest free celebration of the natural world), Bristol City Centre BID (Business Improvement District) and Redcliffe and Temple BID.

The City Nature Challenge walks are free and can be booked here.
