Catch one of the M Shed’s Historical Walks this year
Posted on: 18 Jan 2022The M Shed have constructed four unique guided walks running between January and May exploring some of Bristol’s most historic areas: the Floating Harbour, Windmill Hill, the Old City and Redcliffe.
The Historical Walks are led by expert local guides offering participants the opportunity to keep active while educating themselves about the city around them.
Events are free to book (although donations are welcome) with a number of dates available, head to the M Shed website to book your visit now.

HISTORICAL WALK: FLOATING HARBOUR | 4 January – 3 May
Expert guides will lead attendees along the city’s iconic dockland, exploring the rich maritime history and supplementing the tour with photographs and maps. The route covers the M Shed itself, the Floating Harbour and the New Cut before returning to the M Shed. Tours take place on the first Tuesday of every month from February to March at 10:00.
HISTORICAL WALK: WINDMILL HILL | 12 January – 11 May
This walk will explain how a rural Somerset town evolved first into a bustling industrial suburb and then into the Bedminster that we know today. Guides will point out signs of south Bristol’s Victorian expansion.
Locations for this one are Bedminster Bridge, Victoria Park, Bedminster – beginning and ending at M Shed. Windmill Hill tours will take place on the first Wednesday of every month at 10:30 up until 11 May.
HISTORICAL WALK: OLD CITY | 20 January – 19 May
Take part in a 1.8-mile journey through Bristol’s old city spanning one hundred years. Local history experts will take walkers to various locations key to the growth and later decline as a prominent port and trading centre.
The route for this one begins and ends at 10:30 outside the M Shed; heading to King Street, Wine Street, Welsh Back, Queen Square and M Shed in between. Upcoming dates for this one are 17 February, 17 March, 21 April and 19 May.
HISTORICAL WALK: REDCLIFFE | 28 January – 27 May
Visit some of Bristol’s hidden historical gems in this tour of Redcliffe that includes St. Mary Redcliffe church and Temple Meads railway station as well as some of the area’s best kept secrets in the shape of the Hermit’s Cave and what’s left of the city’s Water Gate.
Guides will educate attendees on this fascinating and vital area of the city in walks taking place on 28 January, 25 February, 22 March, 22 April and 27 March at 13:00.
All walks are at a gentle pace and suitable for participants of all fitness levels. Visitors are recommended to book a time slot in advance to avoid disappointment, head to the M Shed website for more information.
