Heavy Metal in Bristol: November 2021 at The Gryphon

Heavy Metal in Bristol: November 2021 at The Gryphon

Posted on: 20 Oct 2021

If you’re a metal fan living in Bristol, it’s likely you’ve seen a live show at The Gryphon - a first port of call in the city for real ale and hard-hitting live music.

The Gryphon's live calendar is finally back in full swing post-lockdown, bringing together the very best in death metal, grindcore and black thrash at its unique gig space in the city centre.

The pub's bustling musical schedule, coupled with owner John Ashby's 'strictly guests, no repeats' policy (which involves serving a revolving cast of exclusively independent real ales at the bar) has made the pub a major destination for metalheads across Bristol and beyond.

John took over the building in 2010 and has transformed the previously failing pub into an eccentrically decorated boozer and live venue.

In a 2019 interview with 365Bristol, he explained: "I love beer, and I love heavy metal - all I’m doing is creating the kind of place that if this isn’t what I did for a living, this is the kind of place that I’d want to come to."

Read on for a quick rundown of all the live music coming up at The Gryphon in November, and get yourself down to one of Bristol's best-loved independent venues.

Wednesday 3 - Sunday 7 November

The first week of the month sees a plethora of exciting artists take to the stage at The Gryphon. First up, Irish post-metal band God Alone will bring their raucous live set to Bristol followed by local alt-rock outfit Spitfire Tides the next day.

Bristol's own Hollow Crown headline the Friday night before popular Brighton band Bleed Again and Welsh death-metal outfit Sodomized Cadaver take over the weekend.

Thursday 11 - Sunday 14 November

Alternative-metal band Smile More kickoff proceedings the next week with their Thursday night show. Friday sees groove/thrash combo Trendkill headlining, before stoner metal band Woven Man and industrial metal duo Black Skull Ritual play Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Thursday 18 - Sunday 21 November

Scottish death-metal group Drekevak headline the venue on Thursday 18 of November and folk-metal’s Crom Dubh take to the stage the next day. Punk two-piece, Hacksaw, play on the Saturday and melodic metal band Mirages round off the week.

Thursday 25 - Sunday 28 November

Popular Swedish neo-thrash metal quintet Defaced head to The Gryphon the following Thursday. Ghost tribute act Popestars headline Friday before Mancunian three-piece Argesk (pictured below) round off the month’s musical proceedings on Saturday.

November is shaping up to be a huge month for metal in Bristol, with The Gryphon set to establish itself even further as a real hub for the genre. To find out more, browse a full 2021 live programme or book tickets to any of the above events, head to the pub's website.
