Take part in an epic London-Paris bike ride in support of The Grand Appeal

Posted on: 11 Aug 2021

The charity, aiming to improve the lives of sick children in Bristol and beyond, is launching the event for the first time.

Participants will undertake the 309-mile trip to raise funds for vital medical equipment, specialist staff and family accommodation, to support babies, children, and their families during an incredibly difficult period.

The Grand Appeal has joined forces with a host of other charities, offering cyclists of all levels the opportunity to ride in aid of Bristol Children’s Hospital and St Michael’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Cyclists will begin their journey at Greenwich Observatory on Wednesday 8 June 2022, finishing four days later on Sunday 12 June 2022 at the Eifel Tower.

Bristol Children’s Hospital treats over 100,000 patients with complex medical conditions every year. Through The Grand Appeal’s generation of funding streams, the hospital has become a pioneering hub of innovation.

Nathan Fuller of The Grand Appeal said in a statement: “This is a hugely exciting challenge for us to offer as a charity, for the very first time – and it is also a memorable opportunity for any cycling enthusiasts.

“It isn’t a race, it is a ride, which allows participants to support each other, enjoy the scenery and embrace the atmosphere and camaraderie of being part of such a spectacular event.”

Those involved will cycle through the British countryside between London and Dover before arriving in France, where they will travel down quiet country lanes, through traditional market towns, and through the Somme.

The Grand Appeal will be joined by counterparts raising money for the same cause in their respective cities, namely, Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, Alder Hey Children’s Charity, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and The Children’s Hospital Charity in Sheffield.

Fuller added: “Joining forces with our counterpart hospital charities makes this event really special. It is a rare opportunity for up to 100 cyclists to take to the roads and be part of an epic journey and complete a ‘bucket-list’ personal challenge for Bristol Children’s Hospital and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit while enjoying the iconic scenery along the way!”

If you are interested in registering, you will need to pay a reservation fee of £125 to secure your place. You also must raise a minimum of £1,640, but there will be support available to help you achieve this.
