A life-sized lion sculpture has been unveiled outside Ashton Gate Stadium as part of a global art trail set up to promote and support conservation work across Africa.

Presented today (Tuesday 10 August), the piece was commissioned by international charity Tusk, and painted by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.

The Lion Trail project has seen individually-created installations launched around the world, in New York, London, Edinburgh, Sydney, Wellington and Nairobi as well as Bristol.

Speaking at the sculpture's unveiling, Bristol Sport owner Stephen Lansdown said: “We are proud to be part of the Tusk Lion Trail 2021 and it’s an honour for Ashton Gate Stadium to play its part in the global campaign.

“Each sculpture highlights the magnificence of lions and educates about the threats to their existence - raising awareness for conservation efforts across the world.

“We hope visitors across the West Country come to Ashton Gate to enjoy our iconic lion sculpture and support the work of Tusk.”

The Tusk Lion Trail has been set up to raise awareness of a declining lion population in Africa, and raise vital funds to support ongoing work to protect the species in key locations across the continent.

As well as Bristol's sculpture designed by Ronnie Wood, works have been produced by the likes of John Cleese, Noel Fielding and Dire Straits bassist John Illsley among others, all of which will be auctioned off to raise further funds once the art trail comes to a close.
