IDLES take over Bristol stages in new video for Independent Venues Week

Posted on: 29 Jan 2021

The new video for 'Carcinogenic' was recorded across five of Bristol's best-loved live venues.

Revered Bristol-based band IDLES have released a brand-new video for their track 'Carcinogenic', recorded on some of the city's top live stages in a nod to this year's Independent Venue Week.

The band's five members were set up at The Louisiana, Trinity Centre, Exchange, The Mother's Ruin and The Old Duke to record the video, aiming to highlight the importance of grassroots venues amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Last night's release will be accompanied by a live AMA on the band's Instagram page at 19:00 on Saturday 30 January.

Having kicked off on Monday 25 January, Independent Venue Week 2021 is being held digitally, with over 141 virtual events taking place across the country.

The event's eighth edition is arguably its most vital to date, and over 110 venues across the UK have signed up to take part and host performances, interviews, panel discussions and more.

As well as IDLES, artists and speakers confirmed on this year's programme include Arlo Parks, Gruff Rhys, Fontaines DC, Amy Macdonald, Sam Smith and Johnny Marr, as well as Bristol's own Big Jeff.

Speaking on Independent Venue Week upon the release of their new video, IDLES guitarist Mark Bowen said: "Now more than ever independent musicians and the music industry at large need to unite to keep from being decimated.

"Independent venues are at greatest risk because they are mostly small businesses, not interested in profit or investors but in the nourishment of creative, open-minded, critical thinking.

"Independent venues are the fertile soil in which the future of the performing arts will grow. They are where your future favourite band will play, where the best song ever written will be tested out, where the new can bud and flourish.

"They are also vital for a sense of community and union, something people sorely need and miss at this time, without them we’re all f**ked"
