Churches across Bristol set up as temporary tech donation points

Donate any used or unwanted tech to help children in need during lockdown.

Churches and places of worship across Bristol have been set up as temporary donation points for second-hand tech, in an effort to ensure as many children as possible can access virtual learning and online resources while schools remain closed.

Co-ordinated by Bristol-based charity DigiLocal, the new scheme encourages locals to consider donating any used or unwanted tech to be given to low-income families who may otherwise be unable to get their kids online.

Donations are being accepted at the Easton Christian Family Centre, St Paul's Church in Southville, Counterslip Baptist Church, Ebenezer Church in Horfield, B&A Gloucester Road, B&A St Andrew's Park and Crofts End Church in St George.

With the coronavirus crisis wearing on and schools currently closed as part of the latest round of government restrictions, the digital divide in Bristol and across the country has been shifted into focus.

An estimated one in ten UK families don't own a laptop or tablet device, and children unable to access virtual learning are at serious risk of falling behind.

DigiLocal are looking to provide for children in need during the lockdown by enabling them to get online and keep up to date with virtual resources, ensuring fewer students return to school at a disadvantage.

If you have a working laptop or tablet that you no longer need, you can donate it at one of seven points set up by DigiLocal in Bristol, where it will be carefully wiped and refurbished ready for a new home.

The organisers ask that any devices are donated in full working condition, with the correct charger cables included.
