Unlock your creativity with RWA virtual oil painting workshops

Posted on: 18 Jan 2021

Explore a range of painting techniques and learn how to capture snowy scenes.

The Royal West of England Academy team have unveiled details for their latest virtual art workshops, inviting Bristolians to try their hand at painting snowy landscapes and wintery scenes during lockdown.

During the workshop you'll be guided through a selection of techniques by an expert tutor, using several tools and materials as well as learning a few tips to get the most out of your artwork and develop your own style.

Sessions will take place over Zoom on Saturday 23 and Saturday 30 January, both running from 13:00-16:00 - find out more and book your place here.

With the RWA itself closed for the foreseeable future, the gallery team have been working on and hosting a wide range of online events in recent weeks, from virtual exhibitions to masterclasses and workshops.

'Painting Snow' will encourage participants to practice an array of oil painting techniques, including using a palette knife, working on board, using a coloured ground, using thin washes, building up glazes and exploring texture.

Participants must be 16 or over, and will need to have access to a device that will run Zoom, with a working camera and microphone.

A selection of materials - oil paints, two paintbrushes, primed paper and printed artists' images - will be provided by post, but participants will also need to source some essential materials themselves.

Items not provided by the RWA are as follows: low-odour solvent, a palette (a plate, tile or disposable paper palette will do), masking tape, a jam jar, a palette knife, pencils, an eraser, brushes and rags.

With most of us still stuck within the confines of our own homes, the workshops are a great opportunity to inject a bit of creativity into the weekend, and potentially find some inspiration for future artwork.

Tickets for the virtual sessions are available online now in limited numbers - head to the RWA website to secure yours now.
