Crowdfunding campaign launched to illuminate Clifton Suspension Bridge

Crowdfunding campaign launched to illuminate Clifton Suspension Bridge

Posted on: 01 Dec 2020

The Visitor Centre team are hoping to 'Light the Night' as part of the #SupportOurMuseums campaign.

A crowdfunding campaign is underway to illuminate the Clifton Suspension Bridge in support of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of British museums that have been severely affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Although the iconic bridge is illuminated every evening with white LEDs, it's rarely lit with colour - the scheme is looking to raise £10,000 to put on an eye-catching display in Spring 2021, complete with lasers and projections.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge Visitor Centre have launched the fundraising project alongside the Museums Association after missing out on more than eight months of income in 2020, with institutions up and down the country struggling as a result of the pandemic.

Intended to create a unique, special moment to surprise and delight the people of Bristol, funds raised by the 'Light the Night' project will also ensure the Visitor Centre is able to remain open for the foreseeable future.

Open year-round in normal circumstances, the Clifton Suspension Bridge Visitor Centre is a must-see for anyone keen to get the inside story on one of the UK's most iconic bridge structures.

As well as providing information to visitors, the Centre runs tours and talks for tourists and curious locals, but months of lockdown and new restrictions have meant a major loss of income.

Speaking on the launch of the 'Light the Night' crowdfunding campaign, Clifton Suspension Bridge Chair of the Trust, Chris Booy, said:

“Illuminating the bridge will provide a moment of joy and light during the darkest months of the year whilst ensuring that the Visitor Centre is open for everyone to enjoy for years to come.

"The project will be the first time that the Trust has illuminated the bridge in this way, and every person supporting the Crowdfunder is invited to cast a vote and help choose the colour.”

Due to COVID-related uncertainties, a date has yet to be set for the display, but the Visitor Centre team are working hard to ensure that it can go ahead as soon as it's safe to do so.
