As the second lockdown of the year comes to an end, it's more important than ever to show our support for the arts. Bristol's beloved international art gallery, the Arnolfini, will be providing six unmissable exhibitions and events this December. Read more about them below!

 

Jo Spence: From Fairy Tales to Phototherapy

Drawn from one of the most comprehensive collections of Jo Spence's works in the world, From Fairy Tales to Phototherapy focuses on the intersection between arts, health and wellbeing, celebrating her work as a photo therapist in which she used photography as a medium to address personal trauma, reflecting on key moments in her past.

 

Thursday to Sunday, 12:00-17:00 daily. Exhibition slots are free, bookable in advance. The Arnolfini team ask that all visitors wear a face covering at all times.

A Picture of Health

 

Women Photographers from The Hyman Collection

4 December 2020 - 28 February 2021

 

A group exhibition of contemporary women photographers featuring autobiographical perspectives and social commentaries on the wider society, that aims to de-stigmatise subjects around mental health and create an environment in which people can have open conversations about their wellbeing.

 

A Picture of Health includes work by Heather Agyepong, Sonia Boyce, Eliza Hatch, Susan Hiller, Rose Finn-Kelcey, Anna Fox, Rosy Martin (in collaboration with Verity Welstead), Polly Penrose, Jo Spence, and Paloma Tendero.

Bridges for Communities

 

The Path Leads to Bristol

4 December 2020 - 28 February 2021

 

Arnolfini approached Bridges for Communities to create a local response to Hassan Hajjaj’s exhibition The Path, and Bridges, in turn, invited a number of people involved in their work to take part in a photoshoot exploring themes of culture, identity and story.

 

These images were captured by Bridges volunteers and graphic designers Safia and Samira Belhaj, sisters whose own journey has included life in Libya, the United States and now Bristol.

 

Thursday to Sunday, 12:00-17:00 daily. Exhibition slots are free, bookable in advance. The Arnolfini team ask that all visitors wear a face covering at all times.

Alongside the three in-person exhibitions listed above, the Arnolfini also have some digital offerings for those who would prefer to keep it virtual.

 

Chantal Joffe: For Esme – with Love and Squalor

 

Arnolfini are proud to be collaborating with Rising Arts Agency, a community of young creatives aged 16 – 30 at all stages of their careers.

 

Rising’s Young Creative, Manoel Akure’s film of Chantal Joffe: For Esme – with Love and Squalor is the first of a series of commissions from Rising Arts talented pool of artists.

 

Chantal Joffe: For Esme – with Love and Squalor explores the intimate act of painting and portraiture, capturing the changing faces across the years of Chantal and her daughter Esme, moving between mother and daughter, love and squalor, and the act of care and being cared for.

Art in the City: Chantal Joffe

 

The first UWE/Arnolfini Art in the City lecture of the autumn, an in-conversation between Chantal Joffe and Professor Dorothy Price, took place on Wednesday 28 October. Due to huge demand, Arnolfini are pleased to be able to present this online to audiences who may have missed the opportunity first time ’round.

Art in the City: Heather Agyepong

 

Arnolfini and UWE Bristol’s second Art in the City lecture of the autumn is artist Heather Agyepong in conversation with Keiko Higashi, Engagement Producer at Arnolfini, held online Wednesday 11 November.
