Centre of Gravity opens on Saturday 3 October.

A temporary art exhibition featuring more than 60 local artists opens in Bristol this week.

The month-long programme of visual arts, performance and events kicks off inside the Grade-II listed Soapworks factory building in Old Market on Saturday.

The exhibition, titled Centre of Gravity, is a collaboration between the Centre of Gravity arts collective and First Base, developer and owner of the Soapworks site.

Displaying work which navigates the challenges posed by our new reality, Centre of Gravity unites both established and emerging local artists.

The aim? To celebrate the city’s contemporary art scene and create a network of support for its creatives at a time when many are struggling to find opportunities to showcase their work.

The factory building was once home to long-running retailer Gardiner Haskins.

The artist lineup includes Jo Lathwood, Andrew Mania and Annabel Other, as well as emerging artists from Rising Arts Agency, with visuals arts spanning several floors.

Events will also take place throughout the residency, including printing workshops, reading circles and interactive performances.

Established in 2018, the Centre of Gravity team is made up of curator Paula Orrell, artists Tim Knowles and Mariele Neudecker and producers John O’Connor and Rosie Bowery.

In a statement, they said:

“After months of lockdown, Centre of Gravity will bring together more than 60 artists from across Bristol for a month of inspiring contemporary art, film, talks and performance which we hope reflects the city’s diverse perspectives and ideas.

“We’ve worked incredibly hard to bring such a fantastic group of artists together who, as a collective, will address some of the challenges posed by Bristol’s economic and social inequalities and the lack of diversity in many of our cultural organisations.”

The exhibition will run from Saturday 3 October to Sunday 1 November, and will be free to enter.

To ensure the safety of staff and guests, Centre of Gravity will limit numbers, implement a one-way system, provide hand sanitiser, and ticket specific events.

Centre of Gravity will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 14:00 to 18:00, on Fridays from 14:00 to 19:00, on Saturdays from 12:00 to 19:00 and on Sundays from 12:00 to 17:00.
