Community Care Package issues appeal for new volunteers

Community Care Package issues appeal for new volunteers

Posted on: 07 Sep 2020

The project has been delivering free fruit and veg boxes in and around Bristol throughout the coronavirus crisis.

The Bristol-based team behind the Community Care Package project have issued a new appeal for volunteers, as they continue to deliver fresh food to those that need it most amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

In an effort to stretch funding as far as possible, the organisers recently dropped down to one delivery per week instead of two, meaning a higher volume of deliveries needs to be made in a shorter space of time.

In order to maximise their output and reach as many people as possible, Community Care Package is calling on the Bristol public to volunteer their time and help with the distribution of fresh fruit and veg boxes.

Launched in March by a group of volunteers from community groups and temporarily-closed pubs and venues, Community Care Package has delivered more than 12,000 fresh food boxes to people in need so far.

Representatives from The Plough Inn, The Pipe & Slippers, The Lion, The Star & Garter, Easton Cowboys & Cowgirls Sports and Social Club, and a selection of community groups, have been working together to help as many as 700 people through the crisis.

The team buy quality, fresh food in bulk, which is then packed and distributed across the city by dedicated volunteers. Each box costs roughly £4 to prepare and deliver.

To date, almost £25,000 has been raised via the Community Care Package crowdfunding page. Donations are still welcome, with £5 enough to cover the cost of one box.

A huge charity mega-raffle raised £50,000 for the project in June, and fundraising has continued throughout the summer as the pandemic impacts a growing number of people.

Now, as the crisis continues to affect more people in Bristol, Community Care Package are appealing for anyone with a DBS, access to a vehicle and spare time on a Tuesday to get involved and support the delivery service.

To register to volunteer or to get in touch with any queries, fill in this form or contact the team via email.

If you or someone you know is in need of a fresh food box, call the Bristol Food Service helpline on 0117 325 0450 and request a 'Plough Veg Box'.
