Posted on: 21 Aug 2020

Advanced booking will be required to visit each venue.

Some of Bristol’s most popular museums will reopen next month, Bristol City Council has announced.

M Shed, Bristol Archives and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery will reopen in mid-September, following an extended closure due to COVID-19.

While Bristol Archives and M Shed will reopen on Tuesday 8 September, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery will open a week later, on Tuesday 15 September.

All three sites have undergone risk assessments to ensure they are COVID secure, with new measures in place to keep staff and visitors safe.

Councillor Craig Cheney, Deputy Mayor of Bristol, said:

“Many of Bristol’s cultural organisations were able to adapt during lockdown and deliver fantastic events and activities online, but there is nothing quite like experiencing real places, objects and stories in person.

"Arts and culture play such a huge part of the city’s health, wellbeing and identity, and they will be an integral part of our recovery following the effects of COVID-19.

"The team is really looking forward to welcoming back visitors in a safe and enjoyable way.”

Visits to each museum must be booked in advance, with online booking opening on Tuesday 1 September.

Entry remains free at all sites, but donations are welcome.

There will be priority timeslots on a regular basis for vulnerable groups, disabled visitors, and families with children with special educational needs.

Some exhibitions scheduled to end during the lockdown period have also been extended.

Extended exhibitions include Wildlife Photographer of the Year at M Shed, and Do you believe in magic? and Being Human at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.

M Shed's Wildlife Photographer of the Year will now run until Sunday 4 October; Do you believe in magic? will run to Sunday 28 February 2021 and Being Human has been extended to Monday 5 April 2021.

The anticipated street art exhibition at M Shed, Vanguard | Bristol Street Art: The evolution of a global movement has been moved to June 2021, from summer 2020.

The exhibition will celebrate Bristol’s instrumental role in the development of British street art, featuring rare work from Henry Chalfant, Banksy and Beezer.

Recently, Bristol Museum Development Trust launched a fundraising appeal to restore the electric cranes outside M Shed.

According to the appeal, the cranes are now showing ‘significant signs of deterioration’, and require ‘urgent’ conservation.

The Trust must raise £35,000 for the repairs. Find out more here
